monkaW: chat's shock register

monkaW is the widened, escalated monkaS — the shock register rather than the tension one. Why its spikes are short, sharp, and easy to cut too tightly.

What monkaW is

monkaW is the widened form of monkaS, the sweating wide-eyed Pepe. The stretch is the escalation, exactly as it is in the LUL family, and it shifts the meaning from ambient anxiety to outright shock.

What chat is doing when it fires

It is a point reaction with a very short tail. Something abrupt happens, chat spikes for a handful of seconds, and it stops, because shock does not sustain itself the way tension does.

Before you cut the clip

The temptation with a spike that sharp is to cut tightly around it, which produces a clip that opens on a shock and explains nothing. Give it the seconds before the trigger; the reason somebody is shocked is the whole clip.

How Reelium reads it

  • A message carrying monkaW is counted as a surprise reaction.
  • Only the emote counts. Typing "monkaw" as plain text is not read as surprise on its own.
  • A message that also carries laughter or hype is counted as that instead. Each message counts once.
  • A window is read on its strongest single category rather than the sum of all four, and a burst from one account is discounted against the same burst from many people.
